Pure Essential Oils

Below is a list of the essential oils that we carry and some of the applications for which they are commonly used. Also listed are some appropriate cautions relating to particular oils. NEVER use essential oils undiluted for applications to the skin! Always dilute first in a carrier oil for massage or in water for bathing use. Essential oils are extremely concentrated and should be treated with the appropriate respect. Remember that a little goes a long way. They are for external use only and should be kept safely away from the reach of children.

Essential Oil Properties
Bay Leaf (Pimenta Racemosa) - Steam distilled from the leaf, it has a fresh, crisp aroma. It is energizing, refreshing and uplifting and can be used as a cologne or deodorant. It has also been used to repel insects and to soothe itchy skin.

Cinnamon Leaf (Cinnamomum Zeylancium) - Steam distilled from the leaf, it has a warm, spicy aroma.It is germicidal, antiseptic and antifungal. Add a bit of cinnamon leaf, orange and clove to a diffuser or potpourri to purify the air and add a touch of warmth to your home. Strong skin irritant! Not recommended for direct application to the skin. Avoid cinnamon bark oil as it is considered to be hazardous. Best used in a diffuser or inhaled.

Citronella (Cymbopogon Winterianus/Nardus - Steam distilled from the leaves (grass), it has a fresh, citrusy scent. Citronella is commonly used to deter insects and cats.

Clove Bud (Eugenia Caryophyllata) - Steam distilled from the buds it is spicy, warm and sweet. Contains antiseptic properties, best used in a diffuser or vaporizer to help purify the air during cold and flu season. SKIN IRRITANT! Not recommended for skin applications unless diluted in a carrier oil. DO NOT use on damaged or sensitive skin.

Eucalyptus (Eucalypus Globulus - Steam distilled from the leaves, it has a strong, camphorous odor. It is a powerful antiseptic and is highly effective when used in a vaporizer to relieve respiratory congestion. Avoid use if you have high blood pressure or epilepsy. Eucalyptus is toxic if injested, as with all essential oils keep out of children's reach.

Geranium (Pelargonium Graveolens) - Steam distilled from the leaf, this herbaceous, slightly rose scent has a balancing and calming effect. It can reduce strees and anxiety and often used for irritability associated with PMS. Many believe that its restorative and balancing properties make it useful for skin care for all skin types, especially mature skin.

Ginger (Zinginer Officinale) - Steam distilled from the root, the scent is warm and spicy. Inhaling the scent is said to be stimulating and helpful in clearing your head. While fresh ginger root is often used as a digestive aid for upset stomach, we cannot recommend taking this oil internally. Used in a compress, Ginger oil can provide relief from aches and pains.

Grapefruit (Citrus Paradisi) - Has a fresh, citrus scent. It is refreshing and energizing and can be used as a natural air freshener with disinfecting properties. Thought to be beneficial as an anti-depressant, as it may help relieve anxiety as well as stimulating detoxification of the body. Lime (Citrus Aurantifolia) - Both distilled and cold expressed from the peel. Lime shares most of the same characteristics as lemon including fighting infections, colds and dyspepsia. Expressed lime causes sensitivity to sunlight, avoid exposure to the sun for six hours after direct application to the skin.

Nutmeg (Myristica Fragrans) - Steam distilled from the seeds, it has the scent of freshly grated nutmeg. It is believed to have analgestic properties and may be useful in a massage oil for aches and pains. It is also thought to be helpful in combatting mental fatigue. To be on the safe side, avoid use during pregnancy.

Orange, Sweet (Citrus Senensis) - Refreshing and invigorating fresh orange aroma. Its scent and propertities are energizing and invigorating and may be helpful in reducing fatigue. Palmarosa (Cymbopogon Martinii) - Steam distilled from the grass. The scent is sweet, similar to a combination of geranium and rose, with a slight citrus note. Considered to be a cellular regenerative, it may be useful in skin care preperations for dry or mature skin. May also be useful in alleviating stress and fatigue.

Peppermint (Mentha Piperita) - Fresh, minty scent. It has an energizing effect and is often used to reduce mental fatigue and improve concentration. Peppermint aids in digestion and eases stomach upset. It may be useful to reduce pain when used in a rub, and help to reduce respiratory congestion to improve breathing.
